Montecito isn't just a getaway for me. It's home. I grew up here, and my grandfather was a polo player in Santa Barbara, so this place runs deep in my veins. When I come back now, it's like slipping into the most perfectly worn-in cashmere sweater. Everything just feels right.

I recently stayed at the stunning Paraiso Collection with Wanderlust Luxury Rentals to catch a polo match at Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, which is just up the road (literally 3.5 miles). The timing couldn't have been more perfect. Spanish-Andalusian architecture, olive trees for days, and that California light streaming through every window. It was exactly the reset I needed while staying close to the sport that's been part of my family for generations.

When I need to truly unplug, I head back to Montecito. There's something about this place that just hits differently. It's understated luxury at its finest. No flash, no fuss, just pure California perfection. Here's where you'll find me when I'm in town.

Where to Stay

Villa Magnolia of the Paraiso Collection.

This is your Montecito home base. Six beautifully appointed properties on one private compound, literally moments from Miramar Beach. I'm talking a quick stroll to the sand. The location is unbeatable. You're also right near Coast Village Road, so shopping and dining are at your doorstep. And if you're heading to the polo club like I was, it's an easy 3.5-mile drive. The design is impeccable (think global influences with serious attention to detail). Book one cottage for a romantic escape or take over the entire property for a celebration. Either way, you're living your best life.

Where to Eat

Renaud's Patisserie

Start your morning here. The almond croissants are incredible, and their quiches are perfectly executed. I appreciate that they keep things simple and fresh. Grab a cappuccino and sit outside on the patio. It's the kind of place where you can ask about ingredients and they actually know what's in everything.

Lucky's Steakhouse

The classic Montecito spot for a reason. When I want something clean and simple, I order a perfectly cooked steak with a baked potato. The vibe is old-school steakhouse with that California ease. You can keep it straightforward here, which I love. Perfect for date night or catching up with friends.

Ca'Dario

Right on Coast Village Road, this is my go-to for Italian. The pasta is fresh, they use quality ingredients, and the vibe is warm and welcoming. I love that they're accommodating when you ask about preparation and ingredients. The covered patio is perfect year-round. Simple, authentic Northern Italian food done right.

What to Do

Catch a Polo Match at Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club

There's nothing quite like watching polo on a Sunday afternoon. Pack a picnic, bring champagne, and settle in for one of the most quintessentially Montecito experiences you can have. The sport is beautiful, the setting is gorgeous, and the people-watching is unmatched. For me, it's about carrying on a family tradition. For you, it's about experiencing something truly special.

Coast Village Road

This is where I do damage. Gorgeous boutiques, beautiful home goods stores. You could spend hours just wandering.

Butterfly Beach

Walking Butterfly Beach brings back all my high school memories. There's something timeless about it. Grab a picnic lunch and sit on the seawall (that's what we locals call the stone wall overlooking the ocean). It's the perfect spot to watch the waves and just exist. The sunset views are ridiculous. Bring a blanket, a good book, and just be.

Montecito has this way of making you feel like you're in on a secret. It's California luxury without trying too hard. Stay at Wanderlust's Paraiso Collection, hit these spots, and you'll understand why this place is so special.
